Task Two: Identifying similarities and differences between people's  opinions for James Bay - Scars

1. What are your first impressions?
My first impression was that the opening was good but started slow and seemed depressing later on. this differs to Eleanor's view because she just thought that it sounded thought overproduced. Jamie also thought that the start was slow but he thought that it was nice and relaxing whereas i just saw it as depressing.

2. Do you like the piece of music and why?
I didn't like this piece of music because it was annoying due to the repetitive lyrics however Eleanor quite liked it as the acoustic sounds as it reminded her of some other bands that she listens to which play a similar style of music. Jamie also didn't like this song but his reasoning was that it speeds up gradually throughout the song which he didn't like.

3. What emotion does this piece of music convey and why?
I thought that it conveyed hope due to the way that the song builds up slowly, whereas Jamie found it calming and depressing which Eleanor agreed with.

4. What music do you normally listen to? How is this different?
I normally listen to a variety of music ranging from Britpop and rock to hip hop so this piece of music differs from both of these genres as its slower and has a different style of beat. Jamie also found it different to his normal type of music for the same reasons, the beat and dynamics being slower. However Eleanor usually listens to this type of music so its the same for her.

5. What do you like most about this piece of music?
I like the slow, calming rhythm  as it is relaxing. jamie liked the beginning for the same reason as i did but he also liked how it left him curios to how the song would continue. Eleanor liked the chorus.

6. What do you dislike most about this piece of music?
I don't like how the rhythm stayed the same and didn't change because it got boring and repetitive. Eleanor didnt like the lack of clear verse and chorus transistions and also didnt relate to the lyrics and jamie disliked how the tempo changed too often as it confused him.

Analysis of Piece One
In this piece we all had varied opinions that were similar in some aspects. I disliked the piece due to the slow tempo however this was a feature of the song that appealed to Jamie. I think the reason for this was because of the styles of music that we normally listen to. When we have a style of music that our brain becomes happy with, then we will find other music more confusing. A slow tempo would make this difference quite quickly. The main feature that made Eleanor dislike the song was the lyrical content and structure, this could be because the bridge consists of a lot of repetition of the words 'oh oh oh' which is very dull and boring. Jamie and I both thought that the song was slow and boring so therefore disliked the instrumentation as it was just guitar and vocals, with no drumbeat. This lack of strong sense of rhythm clearly didn't work for us. This also shows that the production technique used on this song was very raw and basic. I would normally like tracks like that because of the styles of music I enjoy, but it just didn't have enough pace. I think we found it boring as the song uses the same four chords for the entire song: G,C,D,Em, which was far too repetitive as a chord progression and too simplistic.

Task Two: Identifying similarities and differences between people's  opinions

1. What are your first impressions? Jamie and I had first opinions that were focused on the steady reggae beat and how we appreciated this as well as the tempo increasing and the dynamics get louder and louder. Ella, however, thought the song was slow and boring to begin with and switched to louder dynamics and a higher tempo half way through which changed the song to an upbeat pop song which she didnt like, she also didn't appreciate the lyrics as they confused her.

2. Do you like the piece of music and why? Ella didn't like this piece of music as it switched between two genres too often and they were too different. Jamie liked the song and thought the tonality and beat was what differentiated it from the first piece which he didn't like, meaning that this song appealed to him more. It also had a slow beat which made the song likeable for him as it is similar to the music he listens to normally. I liked the drumbeat too, although when the steel pans left, it was less enjoyable.

3. What emotion does this piece of music convey and why? Jamie thought that the song conveyed happy emotions through its progressively upbeat and energetic tempo and he liked the fact that the song wasn't repetitive, giving him something to look forward to. Ella, on the other hand, felt no emotion through the song other than confusion as to the meaning of the lyrics and constant change in tempo. I agreed with jamie that the song conveyed happy emotions and sghowed a lot of energy. i thought that this was due to the enthusiastic steel drum beat which is a common trait of reggae music which is a notoriously energetic genre of music.

4. What music do you normally listen to? How is this different? Jamie normally listen to R&B which differs to this type of music as it is much slower in tempo and has softer dynamics than this song. Ella listens to all types of music however she is not fond of reggae and therefore didnt like this piece of music. It's totally different to the music that I listen to which is much more British, whereas this has a Jamaican feel.

5. What do you like most about this piece of music? Jamie liked how the song contrasted to more well-known reggae songs such as 'No Woman No Cry' by Bob Marley, making it individual due to its different tempo and dynamics.Ella liked how the chorus was catchy and appreciated the female vocals which differs to my point of view as i liked them the least. I also liked the low pitch of the song and the constant and catchy beat.

6. What do you dislike most about this piece of music? I disliked the the female vocals the most as it ruined a good sounding low pitch song. Ella disliked the song entirely as she didn't like the reggae beat and couldn't understand the vocals. Jamie, however, had no parts of the song that he disliked.

Analysis of Piece Two
in this piece Jamie and I shared a liking for this piece of music as we liked the reggae beat and appreciated the slow rise in tempo and how the dynamics got louder and louder. The reason for this is so similar to the previous piece... we both like pieces of music that have a good sense of rhythm and pace, so having a strong rhythm really helped us to enjoy this. The push of tempo really helped. Ella didn't like the song for the same reason that we liked it as she thought the change in tempo and dynamics made the song hard to listen to. Seeing as Ella listens to a totally different style of music to us, then this is understandable. Another reason Ella didn't like the song was that it switched between two genres and didn't convey any emotion, whereas Jamie and myself felt happy emotions conveyed through the song and liked the difference in beat and tonality from piece one. The piece was all in a major key which was very upbeat also, so the tonality most likely helped us to enjoy the track. However this piece was so heavily produced with synthesizers and electronic sounds, that I think perhaps that's why Ella didn't like it, as she likes musicals and songs with emotion. The lack of meaningful lyrics in this track is another reason why Ella wouldn't have liked it, due to her interest in lyrical songs.
